Young people are often the first on the scene and are uniquely placed as would-be journalists to report events as they happen, complete with their mobile phones to film them. Young people are in a position to present real, fair, news without the persistent negative image of young people portrayed by much of the media in the UK. This project will give young people a voice, allow them to promote themselves, and begin to use the much criticised mobile phone as a positive tool.
Young people in different parts of the country have been trained in interviewing techniques, filming skills and media literacy, so as to create news worthy stories ready to broadcast. This quick start guide is a direct reflection of all that work. These videos and simple resources can be used by you to run your own trainings, explore the issue of young people and the media and make positive news.
We strongly urge you to be inspired by what’s already been produced and to get busy making video news about what’s happening with you and other young people in your lives and communities. Our thanks to the Sir Halley Stewart Trust for making this project possible.
