YCW Stay Silent!
On Sunday 8th May, YCW and Impact members joined hundreds of people across the UK in staying silent for Million Minutes in their first campaign: A Million Minutes of Silence.
The silence was an act of solidarity with the young people in our society who are often isolated and are not given the voice that they deserve. The participants were sponsored for their silence and the money raised is going towards projects which help transform the lives of young people in the UK and abroad.
The money raised will enable the YCW to continue to train and form young leaders across England and Wales. Other beneficiaries include The Cardinal Hume Centre, The Jimmy Mizen Foundation and Progressio. Two days ahead of the third anniversary of the murder of her 16 year old son, Jimmy, Margaret Mizen joined the first day of ‘A million minutes of silence’. Accompanied by friends, family and supporters she led three generations of her family in a walk from St Paul’s Cathedral to Westminster Cathedral, all in complete silence. Speaking after her silent walk Margaret Mizen said ‘This has been amazing. We have acted in solidarity not just with the hundreds of people staying silent across the country but also with those young people whom Million Minutes hope to support. Young people today are wonderful and we must continue to promote how wonderful they are.’
The whole YCW National Team also stayed silent for 24 hours, creating an extremely quiet community house. They even sponsored each other so that they could benefit from the peace and quiet. The silence not only meant refraining from talking, it included all forms of communication from emailing to social networking, a hard task for many young people! It’s not too late to take part in Million Minutes. To find out more information go to: www.millionminutes.org.
